Texas Podiatrist Sentenced to Three Years in Prison for Medicare, Medicaid Fraud

Franklin Beltre, DPM, of Houston, was sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to pay $691,000 in restitution for defrauding Medicare and Medicaid programs, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle.

Dr. Beltre, who operated Valley Medical Foot Care, was charged in Sept. 2009 for billing Medicare and Medicaid for services performed by his unlicensed assistant and that were conducted in unsafe facilities that put patients at risk. Dr. Beltre allegedly took trips and left pre-signed prescriptions for his assistant to fill out while he was away.

Dr. Beltre will also undergo three years of supervision following his prison term.
