CMS Provides Retroactive Provisions for Physician Fee Schedule Under Healthcare Reform

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released updated payment files for the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule as well as retroactive provisions for measures extended through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to CMS Transmittal 700.

In the revised schedule, the practice expense and malpractice relative value units have been revised to align their values with the final CY 2010 MPFS policies for PE and MP RVUs.

The healthcare reform act also extended the following provisions: 1) the work geographic practice cost index floor of 1.0; 2) the MPFS mental health add-on; 3) the exceptions process for Medicare therapy caps; and 4) payment for the technical component of certain physician pathology services, according to the transmittal.
