Researchers searched PubMed, Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrials.gov and reviewed titles and abstracts of studies to investigate the eradication of H pylori infection and its effect on gastric cancer risk. Twenty-four studies were included in the meta-analysis.
Here are three insights:
1. After adjustment for baseline gastric cancer incidence, individuals with eradication of H pylori infection were found to have a lower incidence of gastric cancer than those who did not receive eradication therapy.
2. H pylori infection eradication proved to have a significant benefit for asymptomatic infected individuals and individuals after endoscopic resection of gastric cancers.
3. The benefits of H pylori eradication did not differ with study design, sex or follow-up period.
