ASA creates Ad Hoc Committee on Prescription Opioid Abuse: 6 points

American Society of Anesthesiologists has established its Ad Hoc Committee on Prescription Opioid Abuse.

Here are six points:

1. The ad hoc committee will focus on identifying ways to reduce prescription opioid abuse and promote safe and effective treatments for patients with chronic pain.

2. Anita Gupta, DO, PharmD, and James P. Rathmell, MD, will serve as co-chairs of the committee.

3. Additionally, ASA released a statement by its Committee on Pain Medicine encouraging physicians to consider co-prescribing naloxone with an opioid for patients at high risk of overdose.
