7 best practices to reduce back pain from backpacks

Here are seven tips:

1. Keep the weight carried under 10 percent of the carrier’s body weight.

2. Use both straps when carrying the backpack instead of just one.

3. If you carry a purse or backpack with one strap, switch which shoulder you sling it over.

4. Make sure the backpack straps are adjusted correctly — the bag shouldn’t hang lower than four inches from the carrier’s waist.

5. Choose a small or midsized bag with compartments to organize items.

6. Choose a backpack with wide and padded straps.

7. Don’t sit on a wallet in your back pocket for long periods of time.
