1. Hospitals and physicians can no longer ask patients why they’re requesting their records or conceal the records because patients may get upset about the contents, according to new guidelines the Obama administration released.
2. The federal government created the new guidelines to encourage more patient participation in their healthcare and boost transparency. With more information, patients can make more informed decisions about their care and options.
3. Patients can now request their records over email and medical providers cannot require patients to pick the records up in person.
4. Further, medical providers cannot withhold records because of unpaid medical bills.
5. While medical providers may demand a fee for copying charges, they cannot require a payment for data searching.
