Hiking premium rates in Tennessee leads to questions: 4 things to know

Tennessee Sen. Mark Green requested the Insurance Commissioner, Julie McPeak, speak to the Senate Commerce and Insurance Committee about rising health insurance premiums, according to Live Insurance News.

Here are four things to know:

1. Sen. Green wants to understand the approval process that resulted in premium increases in 2016.

2. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee drove the highest increases, with an average increase rate of 36.3 percent.

3. Many payers sought to offset previous financial shortcomings with the increased premium rates. With more people seeking insurance under the Affordable Care Act, payers experienced higher claims payouts.

4. Increasing premium rates is reflected in the rest of the nation, as well.
