The ASA’s statement reads:
“Monitoring for exhaled carbon dioxide should be considered during endoscopic procedures in which sedation is provided with propofol alone or in combination with opioids and/or benzodiazepines, and especially during these procedures on the upper gastrointestinal tract. Careful attention to airway management must be provided during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) procedures performed in the prone position where ventilatory monitoring, airway maintenance, and resuscitation may be especially difficult.”
