What causes pediatric safety events in out-of-hospital emergent care?

Certain factors result in pediatric safety events in out-of-hospital emergent care situations based on a study published in The Journal of Pediatrics, according to News Medical.

Here are five things to know:

1. Airway management skills, personal anxiety and limited pediatric care proficiency contribute to pediatric safety events for children in out-of-hospital emergent care.

2. The study aligns with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ suggestion that physicians become more involved in EMS training, medical oversight and policy development.

3. Jeanne-Marie Guise, MD, MPH, professor of obstetrics and gynecology as well as emergency medicine in the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine, headed the research.

4. Dr. Guise and her team looked at participants from 44 states and utilized the Delphi method for surveying.

5. Aside from the top factors, participants also noted lack of experience with pediatric equipment and family member inference as contributing to safety events.
