8 things to know about healthcare-associated infections

Here are eight things to know about healthcare-associated infections based on information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

1. About one in 25 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection on any given day.

2. There were around 75,000 hospital patients with HAIs who died during their hospitalizations in 2011.

3. More than half of HAIs occur outside of the intensive care unit.

4. There was a 46 percent decrease in CLABSI between 2008 and 2013.

5. There was a 19 percent decrease in SSI from 2008 to 2013 on 10 select procedures tracked in the CDC report.

6. Between 2009 and 2013 there was a 6 percent increase in CAUTI, but 2014 numbers indicate there was a decrease last year.

7. Between 2011 and 2013 there was a 10 percent decrease in hospital-onset C. difficile infections.

8. The two most common healthcare-associated infections were surgical site infections from inpatient surgery and pneumonia, impacting around 157,500 people each in 2011. Gastrointestinal illness was in second place, impacting around 123,100 people.
