AAAHC Announces New President and Officers

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) has announced a new president and other officers for 2008-2009, elected at the April AAAHC board of directors meeting in Chicago.

Bruce N. Rogers, DDS, who was elected president of the board, joined AAAHC as a surveyor in 1985 and was appointed to the board of directors representing the American Academy of Dental Group Practice in 1993. During his tenure on the board he has served as chairman of the accreditation committee and the standards and survey procedures committee, and as vice-chair of the surveyor training and education committee. Dr. Rogers serves as an officer in a dental professional corporation affiliated with the Department of Dentistry of Wake Forest University’s Baptist Medical Center. The group has 12 dental offices in North Carolina.

Mark S. DeFrancesco, MD, who was elected vice president, has been a surveyor for the AAAHC since 1994 and served on the board since 2000. In 2007, he was elected board secretary of the AAAHC, and also serves as a member of the board of the AAAHC Institute for Quality Improvement. He is also a past chairman of the accreditation committee. A graduate of Yale University, he received his medical education at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Dr. DeFrancesco has published several articles and has been a frequent speaker on the business of medicine and other clinical topics. He is an assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Connecticut Health Center and the chief medical officer of Women’s Health Connecticut.

Beverly K. Philip, MD, who was elected treasurer, was recently appointed as chair of the bylaws committee and is on the standards and survey procedures committee for AAAHC. Dr. Phillip is also a founding member and past president of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA). She is the past chair of the ambulatory surgical care committee of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and editor-in-chief of the international journal Ambulatory Surgery. Dr. Philip is founder and director of the Day Surgery Unit at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and professor of anesthesia at Harvard University.

Marshall M. Baker, FACMPE, who was elected secretary, has been a surveyor since 1979 and is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives. He also serves as chair of the standards and survey procedures committee and is an active member of the Accreditation Association?s managed care committee, education faculty, and behavioral health task force. He is a past president of the Ohio and New Mexico Medical Group Management Associations, the American College of Medical Practice Executives, the Ambulatory Surgery Center Assembly and the New Mexico Heart Institute.

AAAHC founded in 1979, is a leader in ambulatory healthcare accreditation with more than 3,700 organizations accredited nationwide. The AAAHC accredits a variety of ambulatory health care organizations, including ASCs, office-based surgery centers, endoscopy centers, college student health centers, and large medical and dental practices. It serves as an advocate for the provision of high quality healthcare through the development of nationally recognized standards and through its survey and accreditation programs. AAAHC accreditation is recognized as a symbol of quality by third-party payers, medical organizations, liability insurance companies, state and federal agencies and the public.
