Dr. Moore, a second-generation plastic surgeon, practices at the Lexington Surgery Center with two of his brothers, and all three participate in the program, which opens its doors the third Sunday of each month. On average, the program treats 25-30 patients on a Sunday; most of the cases are gallbladders, hernias and colonscopies, according to CNN. Other surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and receptionists also volunteer their time.
The costs of the Lexington program are covered by donations and private foundations, while hospitals and free clinics refer patients based on need. There is a waiting list of about 1,500 people, according to CNN. Local volunteers are launching a satellite program in Dallas based on a template provided by Dr. Moore.
