- According to the report, general surgeons came in above the middle, earning $317,000.
- As in all previous years of the report, male general surgeons earn 28 percent more than female general surgeons, among self-employed and employed groups.
- Among self-employed general surgeons, males earned $352,000 while females earned $254,000.
- Among employed general surgeons, males earned $327,000 while females earned $237,000.
- Women often work shorter hours and fewer weeks than men, possibly a factor in the lower female compensation reported, reports Medscape.
