ACG Lauds Benefits of Traditional Colonoscopy in Letter to Pres. Obama

Philip O. Katz, MD, president of the American College of Gastroenterology, defended traditional colonoscopy as a more effective, cost-savvy choice over virtual, or CT, colonoscopy in a letter to President Obama.

The letter comes in response to the President’s decision to undergo virtual colonoscopy during his annual physical in lieu of the traditional screening method. Dr. Katz applauded the President for screening but noted that studies have shown colonoscopy to be the most effective tool for colorectal cancer prevention and screening, according to the letter.

Dr. Katz also noted recent rulings by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that did not recommend virtual colonoscopy as a screening tool.

The 11,000 physician members also felt the President missed an opportunity to set an example of proper preventative care for colorectal cancer, especially in light of recent concerns and recommendations that African-American patients start screening at 45, due to reports of decreased survival in colorectal cancer, according to the letter.

Dr. Katz also indicated traditional colonoscopy as an important step in cutting healthcare costs, as it “is a prime example of a preventative service that truly saves lives and saves money,” according to the letter.
