GI physician to know: Dr. Anthony Kalloo of Johns Hopkins Medicine

Anthony Nicholas Kalloo, MD, is a professor of medicine and director of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore. He is a past panel chair for gastroenterology and urology devices with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He is also a member of the Apollo group, a think-tank endoscopy group.

Dr. Kalloo pioneered Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery, a technique that enables abdominal surgery without the use of incisions. He has several patents including the use of Botulinum Toxin in the gastrointestinal tract and endoscopic cryotherapy. His clinical interests also include abdominal pain, colon polyps, digestive diseases, gallstones, pancreatic cancer and rectal problem.

Dr. Kalloo is the founder and immediate past medical director of The Hopkins Gastroenterology and Hepatology Resource Center, a multilingual web resource for patients and physicians. He has authored numerous papers and book chapter and was also an associate editor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Kalloo earned his medical degree at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. He completed his residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and his fellowship at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, also in Washington, D.C.
