California NPR project crowdsources cost data for healthcare price transparency project

Payers, providers and private companies have all played an active role in healthcare price transparency. Now, San Francisco’s National Public Radio station KQUED is stepping into the arena, according to a Dark Daily report.

In 2014, KQUED partnered with Los Angeles NPR radio station KPCC and New York start-up ClearHealthCosts.com to create the PriceCheck project. The project is designed to illuminate the arbitrary nature of healthcare pricing in California, according to the report.

Both radio stations urged listeners to share what they were charged for mammograms, IUDs, diabetes testing and lower-back MRIs. The crowdsourced data was then used to create an online tool.
