Share of medical debt collection complaints go up

Though complaints are down in general, consumers who are grumbling are more and more likely to grumble about the way their medical debts are collected, reports Mnetnews.com.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau logged more than 9,500 complaints about debt collection in the third quarter of 2014 — about a 6 percent decline from both the first and second quarters.

However, during the same time last year, CFPB reported that 13 percent of all complaints were medical in nature — a sizable leap from 9.5 percent and 10.3 percent in the first and second quarters, respectively.

In just August, more than 14 percent of all gripes were pointed to the medical collection industry.

It was unclear, however, from the data whether the raw quantity of medical debt collections complaints raised or remained the same.
