The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, analyzed 800 tissue samples from patients in various stages of CRC and from healthy individuals. The researchers found that precancerous and cancerous cells had a significant reduction in the proteins SOCS2 and SOCS6.
Suppressor of Cytokine Signaling proteins are important for normal cell growth, and lack of these proteins is thought to play a role in rapid cell growth, according to the report. Researchers also found that SOCS2 could be used as an early predictor of cancer severity.
