WHO calls for H. pylori screening to prevent gastric cancer

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has suggested that large population-based screening for Helicobacter pylori be a global priority to reduce the burden of gastric cancer, according to a Medscape report.

There are 1 million new cases of gastric cancer each year, 80 percent of which are caused by treatable infections, according to the report.

An international panel of 19 gastric cancer experts, in collaboration with the International Agency for Research, has begun to evaluate strategies for H. pylori eradication.
