New data has potential to alter pediatric celiac disease recommendations

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has demonstrated that timing of gluten exposure and breast-feeding duration do not seem to influence celiac disease development, according to a Medscape report.

The study authors still stress the importance of breast feeding but go on to say that it does not appear to protect children against the development of celiac disease. Other possible factors influencing the development of celiac disease include:

•    Elective caesarean section
•    Perinatal and childhood infections
•    Use of antibiotics and proton-pump inhibitors
