EUS could replace ERCP for common bile duct stone detection

A new study performed at an university-based endoscopy center suggests that endoscopic ultrasonography may replaced endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography as the primary means of detecting common bile duct stones, according to a 7th Space Interactive report.

The study reviewed 93 patients with suspected choledocholithiasis who underwent EUS. Of these patients, 52.7 percent were considered to have intermediate likelihood of CBD stones and 47.3 percent were considered to have a high likelihood.

EUS had a sensitivity of 100 percent and specificity of 80 percent. Of the intermediate likelihood group, CBD stones were detected in 22.44 percent of patients. Of the high likelihood group, CBD stones were detected in 38.63 percent of patients.

The researchers concluded that EUS is an accurate diagnostic tool and may prevent unnecessary use of ERCP, according to the report.
