Anesthesiologists & EHR Incentive Program: An Overview

According to an Anesthesia Business Consultants blog post, Anesthesiologists are automatically exempt from the meaningful use requirement and from penalties in 2015 as long as they have registered in the Provider, Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System using anesthesiology’s specialty designation. However, any anesthesiologist who is at all unsure should check that he or she has created an account in PECOS and that the information is correct.

In the blog post, Tony Mira, president and CEO, also discusses whether the CMS’ electronic health record incentive program is a success. Data shows that only 50 eligible providers have attested to stage 2 meaningful use, four months into the reporting year. In a November 2013 survey conducted by the College of Healthcare Information Executives, 50 percent of responding hospitals said they planned to have attested to stage 2 by the end of the second reporting period on March 31, 2014.

It is important to note, however, that CMS has paid incentives to more than 70 percent of eligible providers and 90 percent of hospitals for stage 1 of meaningful use, through the program.

Anesthesiologists are eligible for the bonus payment if they can demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHR technology. Thus, anesthesiologists should try and participate in the program, according to the blog post.
