Oklahoma Price Transparency Bill Heads to the House Floor

The Oklahoma Health Care Cost Reduction and Transparency Act of 2014 (HB 2400) passed unanimously in the House Public Health Committee and is now making its way to the House floor, according to a News9 report.

The bill would require hospitals and surgery centers to disclose the pricing for the 100 most common diagnostic services, 100 most common surgical procedures and 50 most common imaging procedures. The information would be posted on the Oklahoma Department of Health website.

The Oklahoma Hospital Association has expressed support for the bill.

The Surgery Center of Oklahoma has garnered national attention as an early adopter of price transparency. Keith Smith, MD, co-founder of the surgery center, expressed concern over transparency as a legislative issue.

“I’m just afraid with a legislator, a lawmaker, defining transparency there would be so many unintended consequences that [it] would actually interfere with the development of this movement,” says Dr. Smith, according to the report.

A similar price transparency bill is under consideration in the Idaho House.
