The researchers set out to define benchmarks for an “adenomas per screening” colonoscopy quality metric and explore adenoma detection rate in screening, surveillance and diagnostic indications.
The researchers studied a total of 21,766 colonoscopies. Of these colonoscopies:
• 34.2 percent were screening
• 38.3 percent were surveillance
• 27.5 percent were diagnostic
The researchers found that ADRs were correlated with APCs.
• In men, a 25 percent ADR corresponded to an APC of 0.46
• In women, a 15 percent ADR corresponded to an APC of 0.20
• For men, a screening ADR of 25 percent corresponded to a surveillance ADR of 31.9 percent
• For women, a screening ADR of 15 percent corresponded to a surveillance ADR of 24.3 percent
The researchers concluded by suggesting minimum APC detection benchmarks of 0.50 for men and 0.20 for women.
