The post notes that of the 114 ACOs that joined Medicare’s Shared Savings Program in 2012, only 54 achieved savings in their first year of operations. However, 106 new ACOs still joined the MSSP in January 2013, and another 123 signed up to participate in 2014.

Mr. Mira discusses a number of different studies and reports about ACOs, including articles in Health Affairs such as “Analysis of Early Accountable Care Organizations Defines Patient, Structural, Cost, and Quality-of-Care Characteristics,” “Accountable Care Growth In 2014: A Look Ahead” and “Why Has ACO Growth Slowed?”

According to Mr. Mira, the best available indicator of success in those areas is the renewal rate of existing ACO contracts. A high rate of renewal predicts higher growth rates for ACOs going forward.
