Of the 303 physicians examined, 34 percent were flagged for improper Medicare payment during later reviews. The total amount spent on these 303 physicians in 2009 represented 2 percent of the total amount Medicare spent on clinical services that year.
According to the report, the review demonstrated that identifying physicians who receive a high amount from Medicare could reveal and recover improper payments. The three medical specialties that accounted for 78 percent of the physicians examined were internal medicine, radiation oncology and ophthalmology.
