The Joint Commission requested CMS to approve the waivers to lessen healthcare organizations’ financial burden.
The waivers are granted only when there is no negative effect on patient health and safety.
The waivers cover areas including suites, openings in exit enclosures, doors, extinguishing requirements, clean waste and patient record recycling containers, emergency generators and standby power systems and medical gas master alarms.
Healthcare organizations are able to take advantage of the waivers without asking CMS for formal approval.
