Here are two examples of how ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes differ for the same case and how ICD-10-CM, in some instances, will actually condense ICD-9-CM.
1. Type II diabetes mellitus with diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema:
• ICD-9-CM — 250.50 for diabetes mellitus type II with ophthalmic manifestations; 362.02 for proliferative retinopathy; 362.07 for macular edema
• ICD-10-CM — E11.351 for type two diabetes mellitus with proliferative diabetic retinopathy with macular edema
2. Displaced transverse facture of the shaft of the right tibia during an emergency room visit for same-day treatment:
• ICD-9-CM — 823.20 for closed fracture of shaft, tibia alone
• ICD-10-CM — S82.221A for displaced transverse fracture of the shaft of the right tibia, initial encounter for closed frature
