The Journal of the American College of Radiology recently released a study on trends in medical imaging use, and researchers found fewer images have been ordered by physicians since 2003.

An analysis of Medicare Part B claims from 2003 to 2011 showed imaging payments jumping between 2003 and 2006, going from $294 per enrollee to $418.  However, the rates declined to $390 by 2011, due in part to the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 that limited payments for imaging services.

Since 2006, patient encounters resulting in medical imaging have significantly and consistently declined, as spending is an incomplete measure on its own.
