In 1949, the average authors per article were 1.6; in 2009 the average authors per article was 5.1. The study authors also noted more internationalization of the two journals studied — the American and British volumes of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery — and increased contribution from authors in Europe and the Far East.

The research also found 30 percent of authors in 2009 had an advanced research degree.
