One of the biggest opponents of ICD-10 has been the American Medical Association. The AMA has said switching to the new code set could put small practices out of business.
However, other groups, such as American Health Information Management Association and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, have developed education and training tools geared toward helping practices be ready in 2014. Meeting healthcare reform goals, including meaningful use and improved clinical outcomes, will be impossible without the updated code set, according to HIMSS.
