CMS to Delay Enforcement of Electronic Information Exchange Rules

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Office of E-Health Standards and Services will delay enforcement of operating rules on electronic exchange of information that would make providers eligibility for health plan and healthcare claim status for three months, according to an ASCA report.

The enforcement of said rules is scheduled to take effect on March 31, 2013. The operating rules are intended to create efficiency and standardization in electronic healthcare transactions. They are mandated by the healthcare reform law.

OESS delayed enforcement after healthcare providers responded that they were not prepared for the new rules to go into effect.
