IAP Could Help Prevent C. Difficile

Use of intestinal alkaline phosphate may help prevent C. difficile infections, based on preliminary testing on mice, according to research presented at the Annual American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress and reported by ABC.

For the study, researchers administered IAP to mice on antibiotics and discovered a 10-fold increase in C. difficile bacteria in the mice’s stool and a 10-fold decrease in IL-1, an inflammatory marker. Previous researcher has shown IAP, a naturally occurring enzyme in humans, had no negative side effects in humans.

Researchers hope to start clinical trials with human participants soon.
