In developed countries, the weighted mortality rate was 357 per million before 1970 and 32 per million in the 1980s. It fell to 25 per million in 2000.
However, in the 1980s the mortality rate in developing countries was 101 per million, markedly higher than developed countries at the time. By 2000, the event rate for developing countries rose to 141 per million.
