6 Risk Factors for Incorrect Surgical Counts

Researchers have determined six risk factors that contribute to incorrect surgical counts, which can increase the risk of retained foreign objects during surgeries, according to a study published in AORN Journal.

For this study, researchers conducted a cross-sectional correlational study using patient medical records and data from perioperative nurses. They found these following six factors are linked to a higher risk of incorrect surgical counts:

1.    A higher surgical risk
2.    A lower body mass index
3.    A complicated procedure
4.    An unplanned procedure
5.    An increased number of perioperative personnel involved
6.    An increased number of specialty teams involved
