For the study, researchers assessed the impact of an antibiotic stewardship program, which included a multidisciplinary team, prospective auditing with feedback and staff education.
Over a 33-month period, researchers found a significant decrease in antibiotic usage — ranging from a 37 percent decrease in the early months to 13 percent at the end of the observation. In particular, the study showed up to a 19 percent monthly reduction in broad-spectrum antibiotics. In addition, surveyed clinicians responded well to implementation of the antibiotic stewardship program.
