American Academy of Family Physicians Release Plan for Opioid Abuse Prevention

The American Academy of Family Physicians recently released the plan it developed to prevent opioid abuse.

The outline for action includes the following stances:

•    AAFP opposes actions action that would limit patient access to pharmaceuticals prescribed by their physicians
•    AAFP suggests family physicians individualize and monitor therapy based upon a review of potential risks and benefits
•    AAFP supports developing evidence-based provider education for safe and effective use of long-acting and extended-release opioids
•    AAFP encourages states to implement prescription drug monitoring programs and interstate exchange of registry information, called for under the National All Schedulers Prescription Electronic Reporting Act of 2005
