Ms. Mederos’ indictment was the result of Operation Redex Infuscam — a major investigation by the FBI and HHS into fraudulent infusion billings to Medicare in and around the Southern District of Georgia, according to the report.
According to evidence presented at the hearing, Ms. Mederos conspired to bill over $6.5 million in fraudulent infusion claims to Medicare by recruiting patients from homeless shelters and Section VIII housing from Dec. 2005 to March 2008 to United Therapy, an infusion therapy clinic in Savannah. Ms. Mederos and her co-conspirators submitted claims for these patients although they had no medical problems or received no medical treatment, according to the report.
Ms. Mederos faces a sentence of up to 15 years’ imprisonment, a fine of $500,000 and three years of supervised release.
