Raleigh, N.C.-based SRC, an independent, non-profit organization that advances the safety, efficacy and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgery, said in the release that the BOLD data showed that “when compared to national statistics, procedures performed by BSCEs are significantly safer than common operations like hip replacement and gallbladder removal.”
The results, based on clinical data from 57,918 consenting patients, showed that 10.77 percent of patients experienced one or more adverse events following surgery, which were mostly minor complications, such as nausea or vomiting. The mortality rate across all procedures was 0.135 percent, or around one death per 1,000 patients, according to the release.
