The MDMA statement on the GAO report (pdf) was attributed to Mark Leahey, president and CEO of MDMA.
The following was attributed to Ms. Leahey in the statement:
“The GAO’s report on implantable medical devices adds to the numerous studies that demonstrate how medical devices are improving patient care and playing a pivotal role in driving down costs.
“The GAO’s findings that hospital stays either steadily dropped or remained the same following procedures to implant medical devices highlight the impact medical technology has in increasing the quality of life.
“Medical technology played a pivotal role in decreasing hospital stays by 56 percent and death rates by 16 percent between 1980 and 2000. This is a remarkable achievement considering medical devices only represent 6 percent of total health care spending.
“Medical technology innovation continues to lead to fewer complications, less invasive procedures, and quicker recovery times, all which save patients and taxpayers money.
“MDMA will continue to work with Members of Congress and policy makers to share the stories about how medical technology drives down the costs of health care and improves patient outcomes.”
