Newton-Wellesley decided on the Framingham location in order to build a facility to relieve overcrowding at its Newton center and to handle existing patients. The hospital had received approval from the Framingham planning board to build the surgery center a month ago.

Officials at the nearby MetroWest Medical Center feared that the construction of the surgery center would jeopardize its operations and take high-paying cases from the hospital, according to the report.

Representatives from Newton-Wellesley noted the current nature of the healthcare system and community interest as withdrawing plans for the Framingham surgery center. The hospital plans to look for a new location for the center.
