Sixty percent of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed each year in the United States are performed as open or abdominal procedures. These open procedures can increase complications, blood loss and length of stay, according to the report.
In recent years, laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery has become more common, and the technique has increasingly moved into surgery centers. According to Kurian Thrott, MD, co-founder of the surgery center, 99.9 percent of hysterectomies at the facility are performed with minimally invasive surgery, and 60 percent of patients go home the same day.
