ASC Leader to Know: Dr. R. Blake Curd of Surgical Management Professionals

R. Blake Curd, MD, is chairman of the board of directors of Surgical Management Professionals, which has provided expert consulting and management services to single- specialty and multi-specialty surgery centers and specialty hospitals for 25 years.

In addition to his leadership role at SMP, Dr. Curd was recently accepted to the 2012-2013 Leadership Fellows Program for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is an active proponent of physician ownership in healthcare and serves as a director for Physician Hospitals of America and manager for Medical Facilities Corp., which promotes physician ownership of healthcare facilities through partnerships.

Dr. Curd completed his medical education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Medicine, internship at David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center and a residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center. He also completed fellowship training at the Indiana Hand Center. Dr. Curd, a frequent lecturer and guest speaker on topics covering hand and upper extremity surgery, discussed four key concepts for clinical and financial success for hand surgery in ASCs at Becker’s ASC Review’s annual 2011 conference. Those four key concepts include operating room efficiency, cross-training and staff assistance, fluid OR management and surgeon engagement.
