The fire occurred while 29-year-old Kim Grice was undergoing routine outpatient surgery for three cysts on Nov. 29, 2011. During the procedure, the oxygen mask Ms. Grice was wearing under anesthesia caught fire and burned her face and a portion of her head and neck.
The press release stated that the specific cause of the fire remains undetermined after three months of investigation. The investigation included laboratory analysis of materials and two attempts to recreate the event in a controlled environment. The report concluded there were no errors or fault found with the actions of the staff.
