Online insurance exchanges are mandatory through the federal healthcare reform law. States have until 2014 to set up their own exchanges or must allow the federal government to step in and take over. Insurance exchanges are intended to function as online marketplaces where consumers can “comparison shop” for health insurance coverage.
Washington has joined 25 other states in signing a lawsuit seeking to overturn the federal healthcare reform law. If the act is overturned in its entirety, the state’s exchange could still be put in place, but federal funding would be lost.
