Study: Weight Loss Surgeries in the UK Increase 12%

Information from the NHS Information Center shows a 30-fold increase in the number of people undergoing weight-loss surgery in the UK in the past decade and a 12 percent increase in the past year, according to a report from the UK Press Association.

In 2010-2011, there were 8,087 weight-loss operations in England’s hospitals, up from 7,214 in 2009-2010. The report also highlighted an increased number of hospital admissions. In 2000-2011, there were 1,054 hospital admissions after weight-loss surgery compared to 11,574 in 2010-2011. The report also found admissions for women were almost three times higher than for men. In 2010-2011, 8,654 women were admitted following weight-loss surgery compared to 2,919 men.
