NJAASC is opening the meeting, to be held in Iselin, N.J., to any ASC that would like to attend.
“NJAASC certainly recognizes the importance and impact of fraud on the healthcare industry,” says Jeffrey Shanton, chair, advocacy and legislative affairs committee, for NJAASC. “Fraud is an issue that is always out there, but rarely commented on. I have no doubt that with regards to PIP, [fraud] would be considered by many as the number one reason for escalating costs, and one of the driving factors in the proposed PIP reforms.”
PIP is a form of no-fault auto coverage, and fraud schemes to take advantage of it include fake medical claims and staged car accidents. Consumer advocates believe these false claims contribute to higher insurance premiums.
“Everyone needs to understand that PIP fraud comes in many shapes and forms, not just the commonly thought of staged accident rings we hear about,” says Mr. Shanton. “NJAASC is committed to working with Assistant Commissioner Brennan on this issue. I urge all member centers to attend this meeting and listen carefully to what he has to say. I guarantee you will have your eyes opened.”
