Study: Preoperative MRI May Reduce Risk of Nerve Damage in Prostate Cancer Surgeries

A new study published in Radiology found preoperative MRIs help surgeons make more informed decisions about nerve-sparing procedures and may reduce the risk of nerve damage in men undergoing prostate cancer surgery, according to a Radiological Association of North America news release.

Daniel J. A. Margolis, MD, assistant professor of radiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles, and colleagues evaluated more than 100 prostate cancer patients who had an MRI before undergoing robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. They found data from the MRI changed the decision to use a nerve-sparing technique in 27 percent of the patients. In those 28 patients, the decision was changed to spare nerves in 61 percent and to not spare the nerves in 39 percent.
