The rule was proposed by neurologists who believe the scans would improve stroke care. Most patients who show signs of stroke should be treated with clot-dissolving drugs, which can reduce the severity of the stroke. However, a small portion of patients’ symptoms may worsen if treated with these medications.
A CT scan within 45 minutes of the patient’s arrival is the best way to determine which treatment is best, according to the report. However, according to neurologists, most stroke patients do not receive CT scans within 45 minutes due to a variety of circumstances.
The NQF rejected the rule stating that the wording of the proposed rule was too vague but says it is willing to revisit the issue.
The American Academy of Neurology is strongly opposed to the NQF decision.
