Illinois’ Advocate Good Shepherd Launches Music Therapy to Aid Healing Process

Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill., has begun offering music therapy in its cardiac and cancer care units, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report.

The hospital has been working to incorporate music therapy for three years based on clinical literature suggesting such therapy can aid patients’ healing processes, Rev. Fred Rajan, vice president of the office for mission and spiritual care at Good Shepherd, said in the report.

The clinical music therapist, who also conducts music therapy at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., spends approximately 20-40 minutes with each patient. The therapist will tailor the music therapy during each session, depending on the patient’s condition, according to the report. Rev. Rajan hopes to expand the music therapy program to other units at the hospital.
